If you are lost and/or stranded off the road in your sport utility vehicle, it is almost certain that you are on some kind of 4wd road. Stay right on the road and stay with your vehicle. As long as you have let someone know where you are going, rescuers will come looking for you and they will come in vehicles on the roads you traveled. If you move off the road, they may miss you.

If you break down on a hill, try to roll the vehicle down to a level spot so that you will have a more comfortable wait. But do not do this if doing so will hide your vehicle among a group of trees or if doing so will be dangerous.

Unless your are absolutely certain no one will find you, remain with your vehicle. It will provide you protection from the elements and it can be seen a lot easier by rescuers than you, hiking around in the woods.

Warning: If you have no map, no compass, and no outdoor skills, your chances of survival will diminish significantly if you go off hiking through the wilderness when you are lost.
