Topic: Check Your SUV Tires Before Trips
Previous TopicNext TopicHelp
Before you go on any trip in your SUV, check your tires for proper air pressure and for any signs of serious wear or damage. If you have any doubts about the reliability of your tires, take your SUV to your local tire dealer for a checkup.

See "What About Tires?" for detailed information about checking your tires.

Warning: Proper tire inflation is vital to the safe operation of your vehicle. Under inflated tires will create heat and will create more heat the faster you drive. High speed driving with underinflated tires can lead to tread separation. If this happens, you may lose control of your vehicle and cause a fatal accident.

If you lower the tire pressures on your SUV for off road travel, be sure to bring them back up to the tire pressure specifications (usually posted inside the drivers side door as shown in the bottom photograph). Do this before you travel on any highway to prevent severe tire wear or tire overheating which can cause tread separation.
