|Topic: Air Cleaner or "Air Filter"|
cleaner on your SUV is a paper or fiber filter designed to clean dust
and dirt from the air before it enters the engine. If the air cleaner
gets very dirty or clogged, it will significantly degrade engine
performance on your SUV.
The air cleaner is located somewhere on or near the carburetor (or where the air enters the engine on fuel injected engines). In the top photo, follow the little yellow dots from the carburetor on the right side of the photograph towards the red outlined box. The air filter is inside the boxy looking container within the red outlined square.
Ordinarily, the filter is changed on a regular basis when you have your SUV serviced. If however, you have been driving in extremely dusty conditions, you should check it occasionally to assure that it is not completely covered with dirt. Remove the air cleaner cover (yellow circle in bottom photograph) and check the filter. If it is very dirty, you can remove it and shake most of the external dirt and dust loose. If you are going to be driving in extreme dust conditions for extended periods of time, it would be a good idea to carry a spare filter with you so that you can replace it yourself off the road.
