Topic: Things to pack in your sport utility vehicle - Communications Equipment
Previous TopicNext TopicHelp
If you plan to spend any time off the road in your SUV, hand held communicators are a good addition to your list of things to bring along. These little walkee-talkee type devices have a range of several miles (more or less depending on the quality and features of the unit you buy). You can see in the top photograph that they are small enough to put in a shirt pocket and they are very lightweight

If you have children, you could outfit each with one of these little units so that when they stray from camp, you can find 'em again. We would suggest that if you do this, you do some training and practice at home first. Many of these units only have a battery life of 20 hours or so. If a child get's lost with one of these and uses it constantly, it will soon become useless. Perhaps you could assure that each of the children also have a wrist watch. Then make an agreed upon family plan that has the child turning the radio on for only 15 minutes every hour at a specific time. Even if you don't have children, you could make the same plan with your traveling companion(s).

Be sure to bring plenty of batteries along for these devices Next Topic.
